The Story of ONAMI

Some stories begin in a workshop.

Mine began in the ocean.

Long before I designed my first watch, I spent my life chasing motion — the pull of a breaking wave, the rush of wind on a sail, the calm rhythm of breathing underwater. Each moment carved something into me: a respect for power, a fascination with fluid lines, and an obsession with the way light moves across water, metal, and texture.

I'm Laurent Doussot — designer, sculptor, and founder of Doussot Watches, a Montreal-based independent microbrand.

When I wasn't in the ocean, I was in my studio. For over two decades, I shaped steel into custom folding knives — functional objects where precision, durability, and artistry had to coexist. My work as a knifemaker has been recognized and awarded internationally, but more importantly, it taught me discipline. It taught me that small details matter, that textures tell stories, and that the way an object feels in the hand is just as important as the way it performs.

A knife had to be used, not just admired.

A sculptural line had to have intent.

So when I turned to watchmaking, I knew exactly what I did not want to create.

Not another homage.

Not a simple tool.

Not a dress watch pretending to be rugged.

I wanted a watch that felt like the objects I've always believed in — purposeful, engineered, sensual, and alive with detail. A piece that carried the spirit of the ocean and the integrity of handcrafted steel. Something built for those who appreciate design, performance, and texture — people drawn to precision tools, fast machines, deep water, open horizons, and the quiet satisfaction of holding a well-made object.

That vision became ONAMI.

A sculpted case inspired by shifting waves, with brushed and polished facets that catch the light like wet rock. Curved lugs that hug the wrist with the same tension as a blade's spine. A dial built in layers, shadow, and lume — a subtle nod to depth and exploration. An internal bezel, functional and clean, echoing the instruments trusted by divers and adventurers.

ONAMI became more than a watch.

It became a statement of who I am — and who it's built for.

A modern elevated tool watch.

A sculptural object forged from experience.

A companion for your own stories — whether they unfold in the water, on the road, or in the stillness of everyday life.

This is DOUSSOT.

"5 Microbrand Watches I NEED to Get On the Wrist"

Dave Jones · Microbrand Watch Channel

"I'm not good with words but I can tell you this is one of the most detailed projects we have seen in years. We need several spreadsheets just to keep track of all the detail callouts!"

"The case body alone has more than 50 steps. Then the dial, bezel, hands — it's 10 watch productions in one watch."
